The fence came down (Aug 2015) and work is now well underway for this land to be transformed into raised garden beds using plant species common to Moonah Woodlands, lawn areas and paths connecting up with those to the Punt and back to the main section of the Park.
It will be a marvellous place for bike riders and walkers to take a breather or just watch the shipping. We have applied for one of the Commonwealth’s Stronger Community Grants for small infrastructure projects which will allow us to install a drinking fountain, seating, etc.
Dec 2015: Minister Lisa Neville announced on 5 December at the Park that the Port land along the river will be incorporated into the Park (once legislation is passed for leasing out the port land) along with a section of land at the end of Wharf Road – a very important addition to the Park that the Friends have been advocating for for some time.
A substantial area of Port land was opened up for public use late in 2015 by the Port of Melbourne which extended the Port-owned land along the Yarra River that is effectively part of the Park. This was a tradeoff strongly argued for by the Friends in compensation for the land excised at Todd Road for a new road from the Port to the Westgate Freeway ramp. (Actually, it was originally part of the Park but excised some years ago when it seemed likely that a riverside shipping berth would be needed.)
Here are the ‘before’ photos.
