The Park by night

The lakes are marvellous at any time of the day but at dusk and nightfall the sights are spectacular.

VEAC’s metro parks report released

The Victorian Environmental Assessment Council’s much-awaited report on metropolitan parks was released on 8 August.  The Friends of Westgate Park made a submission here and while not mentioned in the report the photo of Melbourne CBD with red gums in the foreground on the banner to the VEAC page, is taken from our Park!

We support VEAC’s recommendations and particularly like what the report says about biodiversity:

Biodiversity is intrinsically valuable in its own right. It is also essential for human existence, contributing to the healthy environments, clean air and water that support human life. This contribution is reflected in community attitudes towards nature, with natural habitats within urban areas generally highly valued by the local community. A key opportunity to enhance biodiversity, and also liveability,……. is to protect natural habitats on public land.

Frosty morning – an endangered species?

At the ‘Four Degrees or More Conference’ in Melbourne 12-14 July, Dr Karl Braganza of the Bureau of Meteorology told the audience that cold nights in Melbourne had halved between 1960 and 2010.  Perhaps we were lucky then to experience a frost on 16th July.  Here’s how the Park looked:
