In 2009 the Friends of Westgate Park received the Victorian Urban Landcare Award and in 2010 won the prestigious National Urban Landcare Award. Here’s what Landcare said in making this award:
Formed in 1998, the Friends of Westgate Park (FoWP) have transformed Westgate Park, set over 36* hectares and located two kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, from an inner city waste land to one of Melbourne’s biodiversity ‘gems’. A dedicated group of volunteers work three to five days each week, totalling over 13,000 hours during 2008 and 2009. The group has also supervised 1,500 hours of GreenCorp projects during this time, aimed at training young Australians in conservation, land management and sustainable living.
“FoWP have inspired involvement in the project from a large cross-section of the community, with 20 to 50 local volunteers working in the park each week on planting, weeding, spreading mulch and propagating plants in the nursery.”
Friends of Westgate Park (FoWP) has been nominated for a National Landcare Award for their work in revegetating 36* hectares of land outside of Melbourne’s CBD.
FoWP founder Naomie Sunner worked with Parks Victoria to develop the group, seeking advice on the types of programs to be implemented from local conservation networks including Landcare Australia, Port Phillip EcoCentre, St Kilda Indigenous Plant Nursery Cooperative, the Friends of the Yarra and the Friends of Herring Island.
Since this time, the group has formed a number of partnerships to fund land rehabilitation and have received significant grants and sponsorships to cover the manpower and coordination of on-ground works.
* An error was made in the advice to Landcare on the area of Park and we have corrected this to 36ha, as above
Melbourne City Council
In 2012 Melbourne City Council invited us to put an entry into their Sustainability Award which is here: Melbourne Awards submission. We were interviewed and shortlisted but just pipped (we are sure!) to the winning spot. Nonetheless, the committee enjoyed a night at the Town Hall.
