The Yalukit Wilam clan
The Friends of Westgate Park acknowledge the Elders and members of the Yalukit Wilam clan of the Boon Wurrung language group, who are the custodians of the land on which we work and meet.
Our landscape designers and plant gurus
George Fotheringham (Pres) and Naomie Sunner designed the 10 distinct planting areas and Lecki Ord helps with planning and devised and drew our maps and self guided walks.
Our fauna experts
Andrew McCutcheon and Rob Youl are our experts on birds and other fauna. Neil Blake, EcoCentre coordinator and Port Phillip Baykeeper, provides advice on conservation.
Our organisers, volunteer supervisers
Tony Flude is our organising anchor, Michael Cole our Secretary, Malcolm Cook our Treasurer, Jackie Kerr takes care of membership and Ruth Cook, Joanna Cathie and Imogen Abernethy supervise work programs and instruct in planting. Janet Bolitho is our history and walk expert. The whole committee pitches in on big work days. See ‘Our Committee’ under ‘About Us’ for pics.
Naomie Sunner and Lyn Allison took the plant photos. Landscapes and people shots by Lyn. Andrew McCutcheon and Euan Moore photographed the birds.
Malcolm and Ruth Cook and many Friends before them conducted our water quality testing – an important measure of the health of the lakes and those organisms that depend on them. We receive great support from Melbourne Water and from Jane Bevelander from the Merri Creek Management Committee; our area coordinator.
Our website help
Lyn Allison manages our WordPress website and Susanna Duffy – http://www.smoothstuff.com/ – set it up and provided much needed training and support.
Our mulch providers
Before we plant out new areas in the Park, we first spray the weeds then spread mulch. This retards the regrowth of weeds and helps the soil maintain moisture. Mulch really is our ‘raw material’!
We are really fortunate that, since 2003, McLeod Trees has donated their surplus mulch to us, delivering it to the Park and off-loading it exactly where we need it for our next planting. What service!
McLeod Trees – http://mcleodtrees.com.au, ph (03) 9528 4676 – are an established arboricultural company specialising in all aspects of tree pruning, surgery and removal including stump removal, consultancy and arborist report writing.
