The massive job of clearing the weeds and forming wetlands began in the last week of August, thanks to a $55,550 grant received from the Victorian State Government from the Port Phillip Bay Fund which support projects including water quality and wetlands improvements around the Bay and bayside catchments.
This is how it looked before work started:
Sept 2017: Stage 1. of earthmoving:
Dec 2017: Bartlett Earthmovers have made good progress with forming up the wetlands and laying a clay base in the eastern-most section but we are now waiting on the availability of clay for the remainder of the ponds. Meanwhile, good, heavy rainfall has filled them all. Mulching and planting has already commenced and Bolboschoenus caldwellii – Sea Club-sedge – is already colonising the edges.
The new shared path which meanders around the disused rail line and connects with the main path close to the River is well underway.
