Feb 2012 bird survey

The February survey team was delighted to see six egrets and one Royal Spoonbill on the freshwater lake.

Closer study revealed five Great Egrets and one indeterminate, or, Intermediate Egret, a species not recorded in the park in recent years.

With this sighting, the species list for Westgate Park has yet again grown, raising the number to 117 since our regular surveys commenced in 2007. However, Tania Ireton had recorded Intermediate Egrets in her surveys from mid 1990-mid 2007, which yielded 129 species.  See here for the report: Bird Survey 6 February 2012

Soon after, the team watched a courtship display by a pair of Black Swans, followed by mating.
